Pionner Middle School Gets Owl-Friendly
For almost three decades now, the burrowing owl has been on the “species of concern” list of Florida. These means that there is a considerable decline in the population of the owl and it’s only two steps away from being an endangered species. Fortunately, the students of Pioneer Middle School in Cooper City FL have gotten involved with the preservation of this animal.
Pioneer Middle School students in Cooper City FL have been taking care of a pair of burrowing owls for quite some time now. In 2006, the school partnered with the National Wildlife Federation to build a more suitable habitat for the owls: a roped-off area with perches and low-cut grass. Other plants such as sunflower and milkweed were also planted in the area to attract more birds and encourage a more natural environment for the owls. Science classes in Pioneer Middle School in Cooper City FL have also included discussions about global warming and pollution to allow the students to become more aware of the current environmental concerns.
